Is the Mayan calendar right? Is December 21st the end of the world? Let’s find out.

the end of the world mayan

The end of the world nigh, we’re all doomed.

Unless you have been living under a rock and refuse to watch dodgy movies starring John Cusack you would know that the end of the world is imminent.

Sorry Santa, all that hard work is for nothing.

How many times have we heard this over the last few years?

The large hadron collider was supposed to create a black hole and swallow the earth (and the known universe) but fortunately this hasn’t happened.

Yet!

And if you think back to 1999 everyone believed that all the planes would fall from the sky due to the internal clocks resetting to zero or something.

Totally illogical, but back then most of us had trouble sending emails let alone figuring out how computers worked.

Today though in 2012 we are wiser and less easily duped than in the past so why is everyone still banging on about the end of the world? What do the Mayans know that we don’t?

Well nothing really. There isn’t any proof that they actually believed the world would end on December 21st yet here we are again. Counting down the days and putting the finishing touches to our underground bunkers.

You never can be too sure.

5 Reasons why the Mayan’s might be right

1. There is an asteroid hurtling towards earth as we speak

Okay I’m being a bit dramatic but apparently there is a 3 mile wide asteroid with the catchy name of 4179 Toutatis making its regular pass overhead. The boffins at NASA say that it’s not a danger to Earth but the fact it is up there doing its thing with only days until the end of the world… well, it’s a bit convenient isn’t it?

2. The North Koreans are being dodgy again

According to reports (and you never really know with the North Koreans) they recently launched a rocket into space. They say it was a satellite, we say it was a death ray that will obliterate mankind on the 21st. It’s obvious when you think about it.

3. Yellowstone super volcano is due to pop

Scientists and various clever people are saying that the volcano beneath Yellowstone national park has been showing increased activity in recent years. Not only that but the whole thing is long overdue an eruption.

4. Dutchman does an Evan Almighty

A Dutchman has built a replica of Noah’s Ark to biblical proportions; following a dream his homeland would be flooded. Johan Huibers who we can only hope is totally bonkers, built his Ark using measurements specified in the book of Genesis.

5. Fernando Torres has started scoring again

In what is truly a world changing event, Chelsea footballer Fernando Torres has managed to hit a slight bit of form. Scoring in his last few games and generally looking like the player he used to be. Add to this the goalscoring exploits of Emile Heskey with his new club and the fact Liverpool are winning a few matches. This can only mean one thing…

Wait – you’re just clutching at straws.

Okay you’ve got me there. Any sane logical person knows the world isn’t any more likely to end on 21st than any other day of the year.

It could end today. But it won’t.

Let’s just pretend though that the Mayans have it spot on and the apocalypse will reign down upon us. What would you do if you had a week to live? You can’t go on that round the world trip you have always wanted because there isn’t enough time. Just imagine the queues at the airport.

Brrr.

We love a good apocalypse story because it makes us think about our own lives and how much we have to do. We all have plans and dreams that thus far remain unfulfilled and the end of the world causes many of us to reflect on what we have achieved and what regrets we have.

After all you only truly regret the things you didn’t do.

So what do you want to do, right now?

So we’ve established that it’s likely everything will be fine and Santa will get to visit all the needy children (and me, I’ve been good). But you never know; there is a tiny 0.0000001% chance I suppose, so if there is anything that you really want to do, why not give it a try?

The best case scenario is that you have made a big change to your life, and the worst case? Well we’re gonna explode in a fireball of Mayan glory so where is the harm?

Here are a few examples of things that most of us could do right now.

  • Ask out that boy/girl you’ve spent the last 6 months Facebook stalking.
  • Apply for that job you have always wanted but were too scared to do.
  • Hand in your notice/quit your course/stop doing what you dread
  • Treat yourself to something expensive/worthwhile
  • Do something completely random and out of character

The possibilities are endless and as long as they are ethical and legal, why not try something you wouldn’t normally do?

The world is going to end sometime, just as we’re all going to die at some point too. It is never too late to change who you are or the life you lead. If that fateful day ever comes at least you can remain content in the knowledge that you at least tried to do something a little different.

Johan Huibers built an Ark in preparation.

What have you done?

  1. Hi Jamie

Great article. It has given me an idea for my next blog post. Something along the lines of: you have 1 week left to live, now what will you do with your time?

    Keep up the good work.

    Will 🙂

    • Hey that’s a good idea! I suppose we’ll find out in 4 days if it is the end but let me know ok, because I think your time zone is an hour ahead of mine 🙂

  3. Thanks for the great reminders and thoughts you’ve shared in this post. We all need to stay conscious about what is going on around us….and ask ourselves what we are believing and why. Besides, every morning we wake up we have the opportunity to make a new life for ourselves…in fact, I wrote some about this on my own blog for anyone who is interested http://smartliving365.com/122112-the-end-of-the-world-or-a-new-beginning/ Thanks again for your post and I look forward to reading more in the future….
